The 50/30/20 Budget Rule — Works for Any Income
Senator Elizabeth Warren popularized this simple budgeting framework. It works regardless of your income level.
The Split
50% Needs: Rent/mortgage, utilities, groceries, insurance, minimum debt payments, transportation. These are expenses you cannot avoid.
30% Wants: Dining out, entertainment, shopping, subscriptions, vacations, upgrades. Things you enjoy but could live without.
20% Savings: Emergency fund, retirement contributions, extra debt payments, investments. Pay yourself first.
Example Budgets
| Monthly Income | Needs (50%) | Wants (30%) | Savings (20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $3,000 | $1,500 | $900 | $600 |
| $5,000 | $2,500 | $1,500 | $1,000 |
| $7,500 | $3,750 | $2,250 | $1,500 |
| $10,000 | $5,000 | $3,000 | $2,000 |
If your needs exceed 50%, look for ways to reduce housing costs (roommate, downsizing) or transportation (public transit, used car).
The 20% savings is a minimum. If you can save 30-40% in your 20s and 30s, you will be far ahead of your peers.
