Education Loan Guide

An education loan helps students fund higher education when family savings are not sufficient. Banks and NBFCs offer education loans for courses in India and abroad, covering tuition fees, hostel, books, travel, and living expenses.

Education loans are considered "good debt" because they increase your earning capacity. The interest is also fully tax-deductible under Section 80E — there is no upper limit on the deduction, and it is available for 8 years from when you start repaying.

Key Features

  • Loan amount — Up to ₹20 lakh for India, up to ₹1 crore for abroad (varies by lender and course)
  • Interest rate — 8.5% to 14% per annum. Government banks (SBI, PNB) offer lower rates
  • Collateral — No collateral up to ₹7.5 lakh (most banks). Above ₹7.5 lakh, collateral (property, FD) may be required
  • Moratorium — Repayment starts 1 year after course completion or 6 months after getting a job (whichever is earlier). During the course, you pay only interest or nothing
  • Tenure — 5 to 15 years repayment period
  • Tax benefit — Interest paid is fully deductible under Section 80E (no upper limit). Available for 8 years from the year you start repaying
  • Coverage — Tuition fees, exam fees, hostel, books, laptop, travel (for abroad), insurance

How to Apply

  • Step 1: Get admission letter from the college/university
  • Step 2: Compare interest rates across SBI, PNB, BOB, Axis, HDFC, and NBFCs like Credila, Avanse
  • Step 3: Apply with documents — admission letter, fee structure, academic records, parent income proof, collateral documents (if needed)
  • Step 4: Loan is disbursed directly to the institution (not to your account)
  • Step 5: Start partial interest payments during the course to reduce total burden

Government schemes: Vidyalakshmi Portal (vidyalakshmi.co.in) lets you apply to multiple banks at once. Central Sector Interest Subsidy Scheme covers full interest during moratorium for economically weaker sections.
