Financial Planning for Business Owners
Business owners face unique financial challenges — irregular income, business risk, mixing personal and business finances, and no employer benefits like EPF or health insurance. This makes financial planning even more critical. A business downturn should not mean personal financial ruin.
Key Principles
- Separate personal and business finances — Different bank accounts, different budgets. Never use personal savings for business expenses or vice versa
- Pay yourself a salary — Fix a monthly personal income from the business. Budget and invest from this amount. Business profits above your salary go back into the business or into investments
- Larger emergency fund — 9-12 months of personal + business expenses. Business income is unpredictable; a larger buffer prevents panic decisions
- Adequate insurance — Term insurance (15-20x personal income), health insurance, keyman insurance for the business, professional liability insurance
- Retirement planning — No EPF, no employer NPS. You must build your own retirement corpus through PPF, NPS, mutual fund SIPs, and real estate
- Tax planning — Choose the right business structure (proprietorship, LLP, Pvt Ltd). Maximize legitimate business deductions. Hire a good CA
- Succession planning — What happens to the business if you are incapacitated? Create a succession plan and key-person insurance
Investment Strategy for Business Owners
- Build personal wealth outside the business — Your business is already a concentrated, high-risk investment. Diversify personal investments into mutual funds, PPF, real estate, and fixed income
- Do not reinvest everything — Many business owners keep pumping profits back into the business. Set a rule: invest at least 20% of profits into personal investments
- Use NPS — Employer (your company) can contribute up to 10% of your gross salary to NPS — deductible as business expense under Section 36(1)(iva)
- Real estate — Consider commercial property for rental income diversification. Provides income even if business slows
