Recommended Life Cover
₹1,20,00,000
Based on 20x income multiplier for age 30

The 3 Methods to Calculate Life Insurance Needs

Method 1: Income Replacement (Simplest)

Formula: Annual Income × Multiplier = Life Cover Needed

Your AgeMultiplierExample (₹6 LPA)
25-3020-25x₹1.2 - 1.5 Crore
31-3515-20x₹90L - 1.2 Crore
36-4012-15x₹72L - 90L
41-4510-12x₹60L - 72L

Method 2: Human Life Value (HLV)

Formula: (Annual Income - Personal Expenses) × Years Left to Retire

Example: ₹6 LPA income - ₹2 LPA personal expenses = ₹4 LPA. Years to retire (60-30) = 30. Cover = ₹4L × 30 = ₹1.2 Crore

Method 3: Needs-Based (Most Accurate)

Formula: Immediate Needs + Future Needs + Loans - Existing Assets

  • Immediate needs: 2 years expenses as emergency fund (₹6-10L)
  • Future needs: Children's education (₹20-50L), marriage (₹10-20L)
  • Loans: Home loan, car loan, personal loans outstanding
  • Minus: Existing savings, investments, other insurance
