The Credit Card Debt Crisis
Average American credit card debt is over $6,500 per person, with interest rates averaging 22%. If you are carrying a balance, every day costs you money. The good news: with the right strategy, most people can eliminate their credit card debt within 12-36 months.
Step 1: Stop the Bleeding
- Stop using credit cards — Put them in a drawer, freeze them in ice, or cut them up. Switch to debit card or cash for all spending
- List all debts — Card name, balance, interest rate, minimum payment. You cannot fight what you cannot see
- Call for lower rates — Call each card company and ask for a rate reduction. Say: "I have been a loyal customer and I would like a lower interest rate." Success rate is about 70%. Even 2-3% reduction saves hundreds
Step 2: Choose Your Attack Strategy
- Avalanche method (mathematically optimal) — Pay minimums on all cards. Put all extra money toward the highest interest rate card. Once paid off, move to the next highest rate. Saves the most money in interest
- Snowball method (psychologically powerful) — Pay minimums on all cards. Put all extra money toward the smallest balance first. The quick wins create motivation. Dave Ramsey recommends this approach
- Balance transfer — Transfer high-interest balances to a 0% APR card (usually 12-21 months). Transfer fee is typically 3-5%. Pay off the entire balance before the promotional period ends or the rate jumps to 22%+
- Debt consolidation loan — Take a personal loan at 8-12% to pay off all credit cards at 22%+. One payment, lower rate, fixed payoff date. Only works if you stop using the cards
Step 3: Find Extra Money
- Sell unused items — Most households have $1,000-$3,000 in sellable items. Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Poshmark
- Temporary side hustle — Deliver food, drive rideshare, freelance online. Even $200/month extra dramatically accelerates payoff
- Reduce expenses temporarily — Cancel subscriptions, cook all meals, pause gym membership. This is temporary sacrifice for permanent freedom
- Apply windfalls — Tax refund, birthday money, work bonus. Apply 100% to debt until free
