Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)

PSLF is the most valuable forgiveness program. After 120 qualifying monthly payments (10 years) while working full-time for a qualifying employer, your entire remaining federal loan balance is forgiven tax-free.

Qualifying employers include: Federal, state, and local government agencies, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, public schools and universities, public hospitals, military service, Peace Corps, AmeriCorps.

Requirements: Direct Loans only (consolidate FFEL/Perkins if needed). Must be on an income-driven repayment plan. Must work full-time (30+ hours/week). Must make 120 qualifying payments (do not need to be consecutive).

Income-Driven Repayment Forgiveness

If you are on an IDR plan (SAVE, PAYE, IBR, or ICR), any remaining balance is forgiven after 20-25 years of qualifying payments. Under current law, the forgiven amount may be taxable as income, so plan ahead.

The SAVE Plan is the newest and most generous IDR plan. It calculates payments based on discretionary income and protects more of your income from payments. Undergraduate-only borrowers get forgiveness after just 10 years if their original balance was $12,000 or less.

PSLF forgiveness is tax-free at both federal and state levels. IDR forgiveness is currently tax-free through 2025 under the American Rescue Plan, but may become taxable after that. Check current rules when you approach forgiveness.

Do private student loans qualify for forgiveness?

No. Only federal student loans qualify for government forgiveness programs. Private loans may offer hardship programs but not full forgiveness.

Can I get forgiveness if I already paid off my loans?

Generally no. Some limited waivers and adjustments have been made for past borrowers, but ongoing programs require active repayment.
