What is Umbrella Insurance?

Umbrella insurance provides additional liability coverage beyond what your home and auto insurance policies cover. If you cause a car accident resulting in $800,000 in damages and your auto policy only covers $500,000, an umbrella policy covers the remaining $300,000. Without it, you could lose your savings, home, and future earnings to a lawsuit.

Who Needs Umbrella Insurance

  • You have significant assets — If your net worth exceeds $500,000 (including home equity, retirement accounts, savings), you have something worth protecting. A lawsuit judgment can go after everything
  • You have a pool, trampoline, or dog — These increase liability risk significantly. If a neighbor child is injured on your property, you could face a six-figure lawsuit
  • You have a teen driver — Teen drivers have the highest accident rates. One serious at-fault accident can exceed your auto policy limits
  • You are a landlord — Tenant injuries on your rental property can result in lawsuits exceeding standard landlord policy limits
  • You are a high earner — Future earnings can be garnished in a lawsuit. A $2M umbrella protects your income stream

Cost and Coverage

  • Cost — $1M umbrella policy: $150-$300/year. $2M: $200-$400/year. One of the best value-for-money insurance products available
  • What it covers — Bodily injury liability, property damage liability, personal injury (libel, slander, defamation), legal defense costs, landlord liability
  • What it does NOT cover — Your own injuries, your own property damage, intentional acts, business activities, professional liability
  • Requirement — Most umbrella policies require you to carry minimum underlying coverage: typically $300K-$500K auto liability and $300K-$500K homeowner liability
